Siberian Eagle Owl - Yes That One!

Postby John Harper on Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:33 pm

Hi There

Well having returned from 70 degrees and the sun of Sanibel Island in Florida...it was back to the more normal conditions associated with a British Winter...and available dark that is HCT in February...

However as I have mentioned on numerous occasions it's always worth a visit even in unpromising conditions...as you never know what you might get..... The Woodland Owls display at 3.30 was getting pretty cold and gloomy, and only about a dozen or so people were on hand to watch the display. Now as regular visitors know first up in this display is "Cinnamon" The Siberian Eagle Owl...who looks terrific... but has a phobia of cameras....and as such we are requested not to take pictures of him and hide the cameras from his view.

Well today Ashley the CEO of the Trust was commentating on the display, and as there were only a few people there.. he said we could give taking some photos a go, but if Cinamon looked upset we should stop. I managed to get a couple of shots as he did his running across the ground demo....Certainly not something I thought I would have captured when I walked through the door at the beginning of the day..... You see you just never know...at HCT

I was giving the 7D another run out today at higher ISO as it was a revelation in Florida in good light.....and it performed very well.

Lovely John :D - I'd put my camera down after he got a bit spooked by the chap firing a flash at him.

I'm pleased you managed to get this shot John but it's a bit cramped for me. I'd have loved to see one with more of the wing on show. What a great moment though - well done :)

Nice one John!! It was a close run thing, I think he was thinking for running/flying off after the flashes went off!!

I knew I should not have given my camera to Adrian to take home after the 2.30 show....never mind there is always tomorrow!

Me too - the guy with the flash was a real pain last Sunday. He kept using it on the hooded vultures in the 2pm display and every time the flash fired the vultures visibly flinched.
