Grey Wagtail.

Postby jack on Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:53 pm

This Wagtail was in the Blue Duck enclosure at Arundel wwt. Not sure about these shots never got much detail on the bird, they always look good on the camera, but was dissapointed when i see them on the pc.

Did you use a tripod or any other form of support?

Hi John, both shots were handheld. I normally only use a tripod when the shutter speeds are low, do you think this would have helped?

To be honest Jack, I am puzzled with this one - some parts of both images look like they were shot through glass so I wondering if there may have been some movement which took away some of the contrast to leave this effect. The effect looks like one I used to see on my 100-400 from time to time, always at the 400mm end when using it wide open.

Perhaps it is vignetting?

What processing did you perform?

Oh and by the way, nice pose, especially on the first shot, which could have been improved a smidge by getting lower but the vegetation in the foreground may than have got in the way. Nicely exposed too :)

Thx for the comments John, much appreciated. Mainly just resize for posting, sharpen then noise reduction and a very slight saturation boost. There was a mesh covering the enclosure with quite small gaps in the mesh to focus thru. But i think most images i got from the visit weren't very sharp either.

Ah... I think the mesh may be the culprit. You can get away with shooting through large holes at very large maximum apertures (say f/2.8) but at smaller apertures, it's hard to lose the wire.
